The Free Art Society and I just wrapped the Third Annual Massive Mad Hatter Tea Party. It was a great success, more than doubling in size from the first one in 2010. Held in Tompkins Square Park in NYC’s East Village, the Massive Mad Hatter tea party is a free and open festivity that aims to erase the lines between spectators and performers. We lay out an eighty foot long table and serve tea and treats to all and encourage onlookers to jump in and participate in the fun. The only rule is that everyone MUST wear a hat… and the more bizarre, the better. We work months in advance to create over fifty mad hats for the public to wear in case they unknowingly stumble upon the tea party as they cross through the park. Deemed by some to be the “other tea party” The Massive Mad Hatter Tea Party is a reminder that a world of wonder is always at our fingertips. If life is what we make of it, why not have a life of epic celebration?
